How I create
Each process starts with an almost limitless stream of thoughts and ideas. From this, an idea is filtered which is at the same time extraordinary and balanced. Sometimes this can seem like an impossible combination, but it brings the most exciting compositions every time.
After working out all the proportions, Gideon still likes to hand draw the piece in the traditional manner, using paper and pencil. Sketches are translated into a third or quarter scale model to ensure the design is fully resolved from every angle. For very complicated surfaces, CAD software is available to define the final solution.
The right design needs the right material – for volume and shape, but also to take advantage of the beautiful texture and grain-direction of the wood. The knowledge and experience Gideon has with different species of wood makes him able to critically select the ideal type of wood for each piece.
That’s the challenge: can you find the beauty in the right composition? Can you have the wood speak for itself? With utmost composure, precision and calm, every piece will define its own character.
